Ok first theory is one Lordstriker and I composed.

Magic Skilling - Stat Totems

We've found that the exp gain from creating a stat totem is <number of favors> - <Magic skill> + 1
We found this to be correct regardless of totem type.
And we believe the exp cap is 9 at a time as the highest

I have tested this in past forays into magic skilling above staff xp cap and have found it to be correct.
